Congratulations! You are the proud owner of a new Golden Retriever. While these dogs are considered one of the most family-friendly, obedient, and loving pets, there are some important facts you know about Golden Retrievers. Below is some advice on how to care for your new, furry family member:
- Watch your dog's weight. An overweight dog can have serious heart problems and arthritis.
- Brush your Golden Retriever frequently. This helps keeps shedding down and goldens shed a lot. Just ask anyone with a black sofa and a Golden!
- Brushing your dog will prevent his fur from matting.
- Matting can be itchy to the dog and become a nuisance when the knots fall out in clumps from shedding.
- Ask your veterinarian about special shampoos for your Golden.
- Purchase a small hand vacuum if you plan to keep your Golden indoors.
- Trim your Golden's nails monthly to avoid food problems and scratching on your home floors.
- Your veterinarian or groomer can probably clip Fido's nails. Consult with them about clippings before you attempt yourself. You don't want to harm your dog.
- Goldens love the water and the outdoors. Be sure to take them to the park or let them run around your backyard for exercise and playtime.
- Keep a towel and some clean water handy so your dog can have something fresh to drink after running along a beach all afternoon. Dogs get thirsty, too
- Make your dog part of the family. Goldens are very social dogs who are happiest when around people. They hate being locked inside when the rest of the family is outside.
- Goldens truly need to be around people and love to play. If isolated
from human contact, or left alone for long periods of time, Goldens
may turn mischievous and hyper.
- Be aware of hip problems. Goldens are prone to hip dysplasia and eye defects.
Skin allergies are common in Goldens and require veterinary attention.
